Green Beauty: An Interview With Melissa Hoffman, Founder of Sāj Natural Beauty

Back in 2012, when Melissa Hoffman, Founder, and CEO of Sāj Natural Beauty, was pregnant she started to pay attention to all the ingredients in her beauty products. She said her journey really started with food- she ate as natural and organic as possible, which led her to look closer at the beauty products she was using. The warning signs on certain beauty products that said ‘Consult a doctor before use if nursing or pregnant’ made her think if it’s not safe for a baby, it should not be safe for anyone.

From then on, she started educating herself with the ingredients in makeup, learning about the harm that certain ingredients cause to the body. Melissa discovered a lot of great natural and organic beauty brands but had nowhere to shop for them in her hometown of Las Vegas. She wanted a place where she could test the products and ask questions about the ingredients in natural beauty products, so with that, Sāj Natural Beauty was born.

Q: What was the most surprising thing in your research that you found?

A: The thing that surprised me the most is over 80% of what you put on your body gets absorbed into your bloodstream. Another thing that surprised me is that in a year you eat about 5 pounds of lipstick, which is especially scary if you look at all the chemicals that are in lipstick. It is important to read all the ingredients and look at what causes cancer. Even some sunscreens cause skin cancer. The fact that some sunblocks, which are made to prevent skin cancer, have chemicals in them that causes skin cancer is pretty scary.

Q: Why should people be using natural beauty products?

A: First, it is good for your health. Second, natural beauty products are cruelty-free and packaged in recycled materials or packaged in materials that can be recycled. Natural beauty products are good for the planet and good for you. Overall, it’s just a better way of life.

Q: What is something you can guarantee for Sāj customers?

Q: What is something that you have learned with launching your own Shopify store?

A: The importance of an email list. Every day I am learning something new when it comes to marketing, running ads, using targeting keywords. I knew nothing about coding before launching my store. I still don’t know a lot about coding, but I know so much more than when I started. Every day is a learning experience.

Q: What are your top marketing tips for other beauty stores out there?

A: Stay relevant! Engage with your customers! A good social media presence is really important. I believe that it is important to stay transparent on both your website and social media. Being transparent is a great way to build relationships with your customers. Additionally, being transparent allows you to have stronger engagement with your audience.

Q: What is your favorite social media platform, and why?

A: Instagram! It is easy to engage with customers by liking and commenting on photos.

Q: If you were on a deserted island what two marketing tools would you bring with you?

I would bring Instagram and Facebook ads.

Q: If you were on a deserted island, which two products from your store would you bring with you?

A: Sun block is definitely a necessity- I would bring Suntegrity. I would also bring a good aromatherapy spray to keep me refreshed- Happy Spritz!

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
