Social media is important for companies to utilize for branding. Being on a social media platform and using effective social media strategies can help expose your business to a wider audience. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), on the other hand, can boost a website’s ranking and in turn increase visitor count and potential leads for a business. When social media and SEO come together, it’s a powerful combination to propel your business forward on the internet.

How do you do that exactly? Like I mentioned earlier, social signals and SEO interact. This combination of optimized content and social media platforms to promote to a wider audience is called social seo. Markitors found the importance of social SEO, which is why we pivoted our business accordingly, specializing in these two areas.

Do social signals affect ranking in a search engines results page (SERP)? The short answer is no. To elaborate, a website’s ranking can be impacted by social media if your audience can access your sites via a link for example and if you set up your site in a way that a visitor can easily share your content. However, the ranking is not affected the way a link to the website does where the site authority increases.

In 2010, the former head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, stated in this video that Google does take into account links from social media platforms like Facebook in ranking. Then in this video made later in 2014, Cutts said that those links are not used to rank websites. If that’s the case, then how do SEO and social media help each other?

An example is the effect of a post that gets shared on social media platforms. In November of 2018, a Markitors article titled “Banned Instagram Hashtags 2019 – Tags You Didn’t Know Were Blocked” was shared almost 500 times on Facebook. It was well-received by many, and in turn, Markitors gained 15,000 visitors from that one post alone. That provided an opportunity for us to get leads or have our other content shared on social media leading to more exposure.

4 Tips on Social SEO

How can you better use social media and SEO together to rank as number on a  SERP?

Here are a few tips:

Optimize your social media accounts

Make sure that you link your website in your profile. Also add your keyword. If you own a local business, add the address!

Connect with your followers

In order to keep your followers engaged and interested in your brand, interact with them. This creates brand loyalty which will help with engagement both on the platform and potentially your website.

Create optimized and relevant content

Does the content align with your business? Does it contain the keywords you want to rank for as well as links that allows the reader to easily share the article? Is it concise and well-written? What about a shareable image? How original is it?

Create and apply a strategy on social media

Figure out the best time to post on each social media platform. How will your Instagram layout look like? Is the image and/or caption engaging? What hashtags will you use? (Check out our social media tips here).

Conclusion

Regardless of what Google says about the matter, it’s important to keep a social media presence to develop your brand and to reach potential leads on the platform because SEO and social media go hand in hand, especially in this day and age where everyone and their grandma are socializing online. You never know how far and wide your content can reach the internet through the power of sharing.
