In this tutorial, we will identify what to do with low search volume keywords.
Why are low search volume keywords important with Google AdWords?
A low search volume keyword means that people don’t search for this term very often, so it isn’t eligible to show your ads.
If you’re relying on these keywords to generate clicks, this is a problem that needs to be fixed.
So, what should we do with low search volume keywords?
Here’s the steps on how to identify low search volume keywords, and what to do with them.
1. Sign in to your AdWords account.
2. Go to Campaigns
3. Select your Campaign
4. Click Keywords.
5. Organize Keywords by clicking on Status.
6. Identify keywords with Low Search Volumes.
7. There are three things you can do when you find a keyword with a low search volume
a. Change the keyword to be less specific.
padres tickets military discount = padres tickets military
b. Change the keyword to have a higher volume keyword
astros military tickets = astros military
If you do this, make sure that you add negative keywords so that ads do not display for irrelevant search queries. For example, “astros military” should have negative keywords added like “jersey,” “hat,” or “night.”
c. Create a new ad group with the keyword
This solution is relevant for companies who want to appear for local searches. For example, a school in Miami.
Let’s take the keyword, IB preschool Miami.
This is a relevant keyword, so how do we get this keyword to display? By removing the keyword, “Miami,” and creating a new ad group just appearing for local searches.
What I’m going to do is create a new ad group removing the word “miami,” but just showing the ad to people searching within Miami.
I’m going to go to our “Local Searches Miami” campaign, which is just targeting people searching within Miami. I’m going to set up a new ad group within this campaign targeting IB Preschool. This means that someone can type in “IB Preschool” without the word “Miami” and our ad will display.
This ensures that our ads are appearing on the local level, and avoid low search volumes.
d. Pause the keyword. If you can’t seem to find a keyword that fits, pause the keyword and move on.

That’s what to do when you find low search volume keywords. Either change the keyword, pause the keyword, or put the keyword in a more relevant ad group.
